Why You Should Encourage Your Employees’ Side Hustles

In today’s gig economy, it’s not uncommon for people to have multiple forms of income. Some may work at an office during the day and retail at night, and others might work in the restaurant industry and also have an online shop. When it comes to your office culture, it can be beneficial to embrace rather than reject your employees’ side hustles.

Here’s why.

Side jobs teach outside skills that can be applicable to work.

When people have a side hustle, they can learn skills they may not learn at their main job. Skills like budgeting, project management, and customer service are just a few examples. These skills, in turn, can help your employees become more rounded and better at their jobs because of their breadth of experience. They can continue their education without you having to spend money on training courses.

They promote creativity, innovation, and proactivity.

Anyone who works 40 hours a week at one job and then 10-20 hours at another has to be on top of their game. People with side gigs are often self-starters and time management masters. Plus, their creative muscles are exercised constantly by generating new ideas, resulting in more innovation for your company.

It may help them feel more fulfilled.

Sorry to break it to you, but for some people, a job is just a job. It’s a way to earn money so that they can live according to their standards. But by allowing your employees to enthusiastically participate in their side hustles, you can help them fuel their passion, resulting in more satisfaction in their day-to-day. Additionally, a side gig can help your employees feel more financially secure, promoting a healthier well-being overall.

Want to know how we practice what we preach? In an advertising agency, it’s no surprise that we employ lots of creative types. For example, one of our designers, Bri, sells her paintings and illustrations online. Our account manager, Emma, runs a successful photography business. And I’m an actor when I’m not on the clock. HDco believes that when you support the person, not just the employee, you make an investment in better business.

Obviously, you can set boundaries in your office when it comes to side hustles. For example, no working on the side gig while on your clock, you can include non-compete clauses in employee contracts, etc. But by encouraging your employees’ side hustles, you show you care. This not only improves your company culture and well-being, it results in a more content and productive workplace.
